Carol, Tom, Elisabeth in Cologne

Isn't it strange? You meet a family for the first time, they live half a world away, and yet there is an immediate closeness and comfort from the first moment?
This was the case today as I met Carol and her family in the pouring rain in Cologne.
"I don't understand this," I said, "the weather has been marvellous for weeks!"
"It ALWAYS rains when I am in Cologne!" she said.
"Please, in that case, can you leave very soon?" I begged.

We climbed to the top of the cathedral. Warning: it is a long way up and no elevator! But all three of them managed it with aplomb. We were joined by my intrepid son, Lionel.

We walked along the Rhine river front, by which time the sun had miraculously come out.

We had lunch and were joined by the lovely Eva, former exchange student in Seattle:

Comments:
It's really true -- friendships established on the internet really can be as real as the "regular" kind of friendships! Geoffrey, thanks so much for taking a whole entire day out of your incredibly busy schedule to play tourist guide for us in Köln... including not only all the sights and expalnations, but the patience around Elisabeth's last-minute plans to stay and paaaart-taaaay with Lionel and friends! She arrived in Kassel exhausted, but full of great stories. Many thanks to BOTH of you. Tom has also been talking a great deal about how much he likes you and appreciates the time you took for us.

Looking forward to seeing you again on the 29th!

Carol (and Tom and Elisabeth)
